Summer camp! The very words conjure up images of sandy shores, exciting activities, and newfound friendships. As the date draws closer, the anticipation is likely building for both you and your child. To ensure a smooth transition and a truly positive experience, a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s your guide to getting your child ready for an unforgettable summer adventure.

1. Talk It Up (Positively!):

Start the conversation early and often. Discuss the exciting activities your child will get to participate in – swimming, surfing, arts and crafts, nature walks, maybe even some unique Virginia Beach adventures! Share positive stories about your own camp experiences or those of friends and family. Focus on the fun and new opportunities awaiting them. Address any anxieties they might have openly and honestly, reassuring them that it’s normal to feel a little nervous.

2. Visit the Virtual Camp (If Possible):

Many camps, including those in Virginia Beach, offer virtual tours or have extensive photo and video galleries on their websites. Explore these together with your child. Familiarizing them with the layout, cabins, and activity areas can help ease any pre-camp jitters.

3. Pack Smart, Pack Together:

Involve your child in the packing process. This gives them a sense of ownership and helps them know what they’re bringing. Go through the camp’s packing list together and explain the purpose of each item. Label everything clearly with their name! This is especially important for keeping track of belongings during busy camp days.

4. Practice Independence:

Summer camp is a fantastic opportunity for kids to develop independence. In the weeks leading up to camp, encourage them to practice self-care tasks like making their bed, getting dressed, organizing their belongings, and managing their toiletries. If they’ll be responsible for any specific tasks at camp, like carrying their own water bottle or towel, practice those too.

5. Talk About Camp Life:

Discuss the daily routines at camp. Explain that there will be scheduled activities, mealtimes, and rest periods. Talk about respecting counselors and fellow campers, following rules, and resolving minor conflicts independently. This helps set realistic expectations.

6. Address Homesickness Proactively:

It’s perfectly normal for children to miss home, especially during their first overnight camp experience. Talk about these feelings and reassure them that it’s okay to feel that way. Brainstorm coping mechanisms together, such as writing letters, talking to a counselor, or focusing on fun activities. Emphasize that while missing home is okay, they are also going to have an amazing time and make new friends.

7. Connect with Other Campers (If Possible):

Some camps offer pre-camp meet-and-greets or have online forums for registered campers. If these opportunities exist, encourage your child to participate. Connecting with other future campers beforehand can help them feel more comfortable on arrival.

8. Trust the Camp Staff:

Reassure your child that the counselors and camp staff are there to take care of them and ensure their safety and well-being. Talk about how counselors are there to help if they have any problems or concerns.

9. A Little Piece of Home:

Consider allowing your child to bring a small, comforting item from home, like a favorite stuffed animal or a family photo. Check the camp’s policy on personal items beforehand.

10. Set a Positive Tone for Departure:

On the day of departure, be enthusiastic and upbeat. A positive goodbye will help your child feel confident and excited for their adventure. Trust that you’ve prepared them well and that the camp staff will take good care of them.

Preparing your child for summer camp is an exciting journey in itself. By taking these steps, you’ll help them transition smoothly into camp life, allowing them to embrace the adventure, build confidence, and create memories that will last a lifetime under the Virginia sun. Happy camping!
